아래 글의 원 클릭을 다 읽었다.  이틀만에 다 읽었지만, 성질 급한 사람이라면 하루만에라도 읽을 수 있을 것이다.  아마존닷컴은 아주 특이한 회사이다.  아래 표를 보라.

아마존 닷컴은 닷컴 버블을 살아남았을 뿐만 아니라, 요즘도 아주 잘 나가는 회사이다.  얼마나 잘 나가는지는 맨 아래의 표를 참고…  옆의 표를 보면, 특이한 점이 하나 있다.  그것은 바로 회사 주가도 급등하고, 회사 수입(revenue)도 급등하는데 그럼에도 불구하고 수익(profit)은 “0″ 을 가까스로 지키고 있다는 것이다.  왜 그럴까?

아마존닷컴의 여섯 가지 핵심 가치는 “고객에의 집착, 소유, 모호하면 행동으로 옮기라, 근검, 채용할 때에는 기준을 높게, 그리고 혁신(customer obsession, ownership, bias for action, frugality, high hiring bar and innovation)”이라고 한다 (p. 164).

누구나 고객중심, 고객만족을 이야기하지만 맨 처음으로 책을 팔았던 1995년부터 지금까지 거의 20년 동안 그렇게나 많은 장사를 하면서 아직도 돈 한 푼도 남기지 않는다는 것은 절대로 쉬운 일은 아닐 것이다.  옆의 그림에 따르면 연간 수입이 한화로 대략 50조가 넘는 금액인데 말이다.

이쯤 되면, 소위 “고객 중심”을 이야기하는 어떤 회사도 깨갱할 수 밖에 없는 것 아닌가?  ”One Click”을 읽으면서 아마존닷컴과 제프 비조스의 진짜 무서운 점은 바로 이것이 아닐까?

앞의 글에서처럼 반즈앤노블과 같은 전통적인 회사와 대립각을 세우게 된 최초의 계기는 1997년 아마존닷컴이 전통적인 방식으로 주문을 받아서 도매상 및 출판사에 주문을 넘기는 방식이 아니라 직접적으로 도매상 사업에 뛰어들었다고 할 만한 웨어하우스 방식으로 바꾼 것 때문이었다.  이 사건에 대해서, 이 책에 따르면,

Although distributors failed in their attempts to get into Amazon’s business, Amazon was able to make inroads into the distributors’ business.  Bezos knew that shipping most of their books from Amazon’s warehouses would be faster.  It was a process he could control and improve himself, and the race to build ever larger and more automated distribution centers was on.  ”There are huge efficiencies to be gained through drop-shipping (from the distributor), but they are paid for by increased complexity in sorting,” Bezos said.  ”Your partner [the distributor] has to be very adept, because if it is done wrong you can really mess up your customer service.”
Bezos didn’t want to build just any warehouses.  His distribution centers had to organize books, find them quickly, match them with shipping orders, package them, and get them in the mail.  He wanted the most efficient high-tech distribution centers in the world, and started hiring people to help bring that about.  One place he started hiring from was Wall-Mart, known for its computerized distribution centers. (p. 107 – 108)

이 작업이 끝나고 나서 그는 이렇게 말했다고 한다.  ”This is the fastest expansion of distribution capacity in peacetime history” (p. 109).  사실상 이정도 강박은 있어야 “고객 만족”이 어쩌고, “고개 중심”이 어쩌고 할 수 있는 것 아닌가라는 생각이…

오래전부터 읽고 싶긴 했었는데 왠지 책이랑 궁합이 맞질 않는지 따로 살 기회가 없다가, 엊그제 도서관에 갔다가 보이길래 냉큼 집어 왔다.  하루 시간을 내서 읽었는데, 7 habits가 너무 지겨웠는지, 냉큼 절반 정도를 읽어 버렸다.  원래 이런 책을 좋아하기도 하지만, 이런 속도라면 이틀이면 다 읽을 듯…  이 책을 읽으면서 알게 된 것 가운데, 약간 당황스러운게 왜 나도 Jeff Bezos가 아마존을 만들기 전에 투자은행가라고 생각했을까라는 것이다.  월 스트리트에서 일하긴 했었지만, 기본적으로는 IT 업무를 했던 사람이라는 걸 이 책에서 알았다.

아마존이 제법 자리를 잡고 나자 책 도매상인 Ingram이 직접 소매를 하겠다고 나섰다가 이게 잘 안되자 반즈앤노블을 사 버리려고 했었다고 한다.  그 당시에 있었던 에피소드…

The threat of that combination started a war of press releases.  First Bezos issued a release assuring people that he was not intimidated.  ”Those who make choices that are genuinely good for customers, authors and publishers will prevail.  Goliath is always in range of a good slingshot,” it read.
That shot was not only noticed by the press, but by executives at Barnes & Noble as well.  The company issued a response in its own press release.  ”Barnes & Noble is amused at Jeff Bezos’s quote where he describes himself as an independent bookseller.  Well, Mr. Bezos, what with market capitalization of some $6 billion, and more than four million customers, we suppose you know a Goliath when you see one.  Your company is now worth more than Barnes & Noble, Borders and all of the independent booksellers combined.  Might we suggest that slingshots and potshots should not be part of your arsenal.”
Of course, that release just served to remind people that Bezos was winning the online bookselling war.  So Bezos offered a simple response.  He issued another press release that had but one word.  ”Oh.” (pp. 105 – 5)

사업가로서의 Bezos의 매력이 한 눈에 띄는 장면이다.  당연히 최대 규모의 도서 도매상과 최대 규모의 소매 체인점이 합병하겠다는데, 좋아할 이유야 없겠지만, 여기에 대해서 스스로를 다윗으로, 상대방을 골리앗으로 규정하는 것은…  반즈앤노블에서 지적한 것처럼 당시의 상황으로는 아마존닷컴이야말로 골리앗인 셈인데…  흥미로운 것은 아마존닷컴이 이렇게 말하자, 반즈앤노블은 당연히 사실을 지적하였고 (꼭 당연하다고는 하기 어려운게, 공정거래상의 문제 때문에 거래를 진행하지 못하게 될까봐 사실을 지적한 언론 플레이로 보인다), 실상 골리앗은 아마존닷컴인데 조약돌이 어쩌고 하는 짓을 하지 말라고 지적하자, Jeff Bezos가 press release에서 단 한 마디로 대답하였다.  ”Oh.”

결국 그 거래는 공정거래상의 문제 때문에 진행되지 못했다.

실질적으로 사실을 호도하면서 괜히 싸움을 건게 아마존닷컴인데, 결국 자기가 얼마나 성장했는지를 상대방이 실토하게 하고, 또 거래는 거래대로 성사되지 못하게 한 기발함…  곧 한글판도 나온다고 하니, …  내가 생각했던 것보다 훨씬 재미있고, 생각할 거리가 많은 책이다.
